The pneumoconioses group of lung disease caused by the inhalation of particulates.[1] They are often related to occupation.
Classification
Can be subdivided into fibrosing and non-fibrosis.[1]
Fibrosing pneumoconioses:[1]
- Silicosis.
- Coal workers' pneumoconiosis.
- Asbestosis - UIP-like
- Berylliosis.
- Pulmonary talcosis.
Specific entities
Coal workers' pneumoconiosis
- AKA coal workers' lung.
General
- Exposure to coal dust.
- Impact on respiratory function variable.[2]
Gross
- Upper lung predominant.
- Radiology identical to silicosis.[3]
Microscopic
Features:[2]
- Anthrocosis - black pigment in the lymphatics and lymph nodes.
- +/-Fibrosis
- Contains black pigment.
- +/-Necrosis.
