Syphilis is the infectious disease caused by Treponema pallidum.

Gross

Aorta:

  • Wrinkled intimal surface - "tree bark" appearance.[3]

Microscopic

Features:

  • Plasma cells - key feature.[4]
  • Spirochetes - diagnostic.
  • +/-Granulomas[5] - gumma - in the tertiary phase.[6]
